The Maalbeek metro station unfortunately became world news on March 22, 2016, when this metro station was hit by a bombing. At 9:11 AM, just over an hour after the attacks at Brussels Airport, a bomb exploded under the Wetstraat in the middle of the three carriages of a MIVB metro train. This metro train had departed just seconds earlier from the Maalbeek metro station heading towards the Kunst-Wet metro station. It turned out to be a suicide attack, carried out by Belgian Khalid El Bakraoui, the brother of the person who committed a suicide attack at the airport. Twenty-one people (including the attacker) lost their lives, and more than a hundred were injured, of whom seventeen seriously.
