Famous residents of the Grace Forests were Jan Praet's gang, house-to-house salesmen by day and at night they raided a house where they had been during the day. Passers-by were also attacked in the forest. The name of the forest dates from this period, because the robbers robbed the passers-by without pardon. Until the 18th century, the Gratiebos was a large and extensive forest, from the Kouter in Zele to deep in Overmere.
