In 1959, E.H. Fr. Segers donated 2 hectares of heath and forest to the association he founded at that time. This area, located in the Reenheide in Arendonk, has since been managed as “De Korhaan” and has become one of the oldest nature reserves in Flanders.
Most of the plant cover consists of heath. The area is especially valuable due to the presence of typical plants and animals of the heath biotope and as a remnant of the former Kempen landscape. In part of the reserve, we find a beautiful lichen vegetation, while the Woodlark (Zoetelieveke) sings its soft song from a treetop. The rare Heath Butterfly can also still be observed there.
This dune ridge was a favored location for the last hunter-gatherers 10,000 to 6,000 years ago, who left behind thousands of tools. Archaeological research confirmed the good state of preservation, the expanse, and the rich yield of objects.
