At the top of the Balei you will meet the Roman.
Julius Caesar once wrote his book 'De bello gallico'. In his story he called the inhabitants of our regions the bravest of all Gauls. But those brave ones could not stop the advance of the Roman legions. Caesar had a drilled army, which tactically and strategically outflanked our pugnacious forefathers.
The Oude Heerweg still reminds of those events from more than 2000 years ago. That fact prompted Robert Goossens, a Houtem artist, to create a Roman legionary. Not just any tin soldier, but a colossus of about 3 meters high.
On top of the Balei, towards Oude Heerweg, the determined warrior rules Sint-Lievens-Houtem.
