Originally, there was a double mill (corn and oil mill) here that already existed in the 16th century. The oil mill disappeared around 1748. Around 1870 a steam engine was put into use.
It was the first watermill of Erpe-Mere to be protected, on 25.02.1976: the mill as a monument and together with the surroundings as a landscape. In addition, the valley of the Molenbeek was protected as a landscape on 05.11.2004 and on 06.02.2007.
Since the shutdown (many decades ago), a large part of the interior has been broken out. This leaves only one of the four stone pairs. At the time, the water wheel was "repaired" with its own resources, but with too few water troughs. However, that wheel has been damaged by rust to such an extent that very little of it remains. The architecture of the building (with beautiful bluestone frames) and the relatively unspoiled landscape are important assets to give the Engelsmolen a better future.
In 2005 the mill got a new private owner (N.V. Flanders Investment Company (N.V. FICO), with registered office in Haaltert (Kerksken). In 2007, the renovation of the mill house began. Currently (2008) these works are suspended.
