The stone castle dates from the 11th century, but dates back to a much older wooden fortification from the seventh century. Opposite the Burcht is the regional beer brewery De Rijck. Don't forget to stop in the center at the Schepenhuis and the pillory placed next to it, and then drive on via Peperstraat, Molenstraat and Kanunikstraat to the windmill Te Rullegem.
The centre of Herzele is located between cycle junctions 27 and 32. The last part of this route you cycle in an old tram bed (now cycle path). You cross again halfway down the mill stream, near the remains of an old water mill. All that remains is a reservoir and part of the water works. The building itself has disappeared.
