The history of the 'Appelkot' dates back to the 11th century.
The first known inhabitants, the family 'de Spelt', played an important role in Merchtem's history in the 12th century. This old feudal court is now a walled domain with a 19th century mansion.
According to some sources, the name 'Appelkot' refers to the fertile orchards'; In 1705 there was an orchard of more than 2 hectares, mainly with apples and a kot (storage place) to store the fruit for the winter. Others think of the French 'Cour d'appel'.
The beautiful park is home to numerous rare ancient trees and plant species.
