Saint Verona Chapel

In the hamlet of Saint Verona is the Chapel of the Cross or Saint Verona Chapel, one of the oldest buildings in the region. It was rebuilt to its original state in 1951. The name Verona comes from a former parish of Vroeienberg, which meant 'mountain of the Lord'. Around the year 900 a first church was built on the Vroeienberg. It was already a hundred years old when the church of Bertem was built. Later, no one understood the name Vroeienberg. That is why a beautiful and pious story was told about Saint Verona, who is said to have been a German empress. She is said to have given her name to the parish and the church. In the French period, around 1800, the old parish of Vroeienberg was definitively annexed to Leefdaal. Her church became a chapel. The old church has been rebuilt many times. In 1951 it regained the shape it had had from 1250 to 1773. It resembles the church of Bertem very well, but is of course smaller and less regularly built.
