In this Sint-Geertruikapel or Sint-Gertrudiskapel, at the foot of the castle of Gaasbeek, hung the original painting "The vision of Saint Gertrude" by Gerard Seghers. If you squeak through the door window you will see a copy of the painting. The early medieval Saint Gertrude of Nivelles was best known for her hospitality towards pilgrims. She had churches, chapels, schools and hospices built and cared for the poor and needy. Gertrude had a great knowledge of the Bible and had visions as a mystic, as on this canvas. The saint was invoked against rat and mouse infestations, fever and insanity. She is depicted with mice on her staff. The important Baroque painter Gerard Seghers painted along the lines of Caravaggio and Rubens.
