The origin of Dikkebusvijver dates back to 1320, when on the orders of Robrecht van Bethune, Count of Flanders, the (Small) Kemmelbeek was dammed on the northern side. The banks of the stream upstream of the dam were also excavated and the floodplain was deepened. Through canals and oak pipes, the water from this pond was directed to the ramparts of Ypres (Boterplas).
