Saint Amandus Church Erps

The Sint-Amandus church of Erps was originally a Romanesque church building with a central square tower.

This building was in line with the tradition of the Scheldt Romanesque style of the diocese of Cambrai, to which Erps belonged until the 16th century.

The church was probably first dedicated to St. John Baptist and was later given the title of St. Amandus Church. In 1706 the church burned down after lightning fell on the tower.

In 1773, two new aisles were built according to the plans of the well-known architect L. B. Dewez. In 1864 there was an almost completely new church with a main aisle with the portal at the front with the access to the tower, two aisles with the baptistery along the gospel side and a second side chapel along the epistle side and with a storage place along the gospel side and a sacristy along the epistle side at the back, with the presbytery between the storehouse and the sacristy and with the choir at the very front.

The church building is built in white stone with the exception of the choir which is in brick.

The Sint-Amandus church was a pilgrimage center where especially St. Barbara, St. Mark and St. Cornelius were venerated.
