Belsele is one of the oldest settlements in Waasland, as evidenced by the parish church. Its origins trace back to the 10th century. Restoration works were repeatedly carried out in Gothic style. You can find traces of Romanesque architecture in the lower church and the base of the tower.
Belseledorp 9111 Belsele (Sint-Niklaas)
Past the church, you pass the Belsele court, the green and historical heart of the municipality. The castle is said to date back to the 13th century but was extensively renovated around 1745 and 1904. It is also referred to as the 'Bishop's Castle' because for a long time it served as a retreat for priests. It is now privately owned.
