Chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows or Heath Chapel

The Heidekapel was built in 1643 in the middle of the wooded Heide on the old road Ghent-Antwerp. There is said to have been a Gothic chapel in the past, but it was largely destroyed during the religious troubles.
The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of 7 sorrows (10). Between the parish church of Waasmunster and the Heide Chapel, the Heikewipommegang takes place every year on 25 March, and this since 1351. 7 state chapels have been erected along the route.

The 7 sorrows of Mary (10)
The 7 sorrows or sorrows of Mary are often depicted on bee or processional roads. They depict the moments of suffering in Mary's life in 7 stations or stops. The theme of the suffering Mary was often the inspiration for poems and songs. These are called the Stabat Mater.

In the iconography, Our Lady of 7 sorrows or sorrows is depicted as a weeping Mary with 7 swords piercing her heart.
