In the afternoon of June 15, 1815, this church square was the scene of bloody battles between the French and the Prussians. Napoleon had to hold on to this village at all costs, lest he be surrounded. The Prussians were pushed back twice. But each time they returned. By the end of the day, the village fell into their hands and Napoleon took to his heels.
