Commemoration Monument 1914-1918 - Léon Stynen

Description

About the artist
Stynen studied architecture at the Antwerp Academy. In 1925, he became captivated by the innovative ideas of Le Corbusier in Paris. He designed the Belgian Pavilion at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, the Casinos of Knokke, Ostend, and Chaudfontaine, and the Cultural Center of Ukkel. The triangle formed by the old Antwerp fortress, BP-building, Esso-Hotel, conservatory, and the Singel is regarded as his masterpiece.

About the statue
This monumental work, featuring four soldiers standing on the flint pedestal facing the four cardinal directions, was inaugurated on June 11, 1922, to great public attention.
And we will never see your heroic bodies again, Your spirit lies fertile in our hearts.
(Master Delanghe, "The Knokke People to Their Dead")
