Here we see one of the pools that were specially dug as a biotope for the rare fire salamander. Buggenhoutbos is the northernmost limit region of this salamander species in Belgium. The fire salamander is undoubtedly one of our most beautiful amphibians and is easily recognizable by the blunt tail and the black-yellow markings all over the body. He does very well in the Buggenhoutbos thanks to the pure water of the Hollebeek. But because this land salamander hides in hollows and stumps during the day, you don't always get to see it. Nearby is the Duck Pit, a forest pond that is a true paradise for muskrats, frogs, toads and many bird species. Here you can rest on a bench and who knows, maybe you catch a glimpse of a kingfisher.
