Baudries Castle

In the Kasteelstraat, Bossemstraat, Gemeentehuisstraat and Kerkstraat you have a view of the Baudries castle grounds.

In order to provide the new St. Peter's Church (1825) with an organ, the then pastor sold the painting "The Madonna at the Fountain" by Jan van Eyck. Behind the church is the tombstone of the last noble inhabitants of Baudries Castle, Countess Geneviève de Lichtervelde and her husband Esquire Piers de Raveschoot. The walled castle Baudries with a rococo core from the 18th century was rebuilt in the 19th century and recently tastefully restored.

Via the Beekstraat, turn left into the Eikstraat, where you drive past an old tile factory until you reach an old Scheldt meander. To make the Scheldt more navigable, the meanders were straightened. Biotopes with lush vegetation, kingfishers and grey herons developed around the old arms of the Scheldt. There used to be a jetty around the corner on the left, important for trade with Oudenaarde and Ghent, hence the name Kaaihoeve, on the territory of Meilegem-Zwalm. Now it is a nature education centre of the Province of East Flanders, worth a detour.
