Beschreibung

Already mentioned as a loan from the lordship of Gavere in the 14th century, namely as rented land with a watermill on the Boeverbeek, in the possession of important Ghent patrician families (among others Sloeve, Tollin, Van Liere, de Spangen, the Marchant d'Ansembourg). Presumably around 1780, the first "maison de campagne" was built by a baron de Spangen. It consisted of a U-shaped castle (the current core of nine bays) under a shield roof with a marked central risalit under a dome-shaped roof preceded by two parallel wings with service buildings, the whole situated within a rectangle. Moat with axial bridge and long access avenue to the street. Around 1899 significantly expanded under Count d'Ansembourg according to the design of architect E. Flanneau (Brussels) with on both sides two identical side bays under a new mansard roof with numerous dormers and balustrade parapets, thus forming the connection with the service wings in front of it. These were raised by a half floor, under a flat roof instead of the original shield roof. The moat behind the castle was filled in and the park redesigned according to the design of landscape architect Henri Duchêne, possibly in collaboration with his son Achille. Now still an imposing classicist-style castle with a main building of thirteen bays and two storeys under a mansard roof (slates) instead of the original shield roof, with added dormer windows. Marked central protruding bay with staircase and a separate dome-shaped mansard roof. Also added a bulging iron balcony above the door. Blocked corner bands outline the nine original bays. Furthermore, slightly arched and rectangular windows (shutters now disappeared) and basket-arched doors in quarter hollow profiles in the added side bays. Right-angled east and west wings of four bays each and two and a half storeys under flat roofs and balustrades. Adjacent ochre-colored painted brick stables of ten bays (originally eight) and one and a half storeys under hipped roofs sloping down at the front. Bay arrangement by brick pilasters between which are round-arched gates and overgrown round-arched niches with oculi. West wing with, among other things, caretaker's house with a walled garden to its left with access gate between brick gate pillars with decorative vases. Rear facade of the castle facing north. Originally U-shaped with a central wing of five bays and protruding side risalits of two bays each, currently flanked left and right by two bays with rounded corners. Completely plastered and painted façade with a central risalit of three bays, outlined by blocked pilasters and under a curved, interrupted pediment with a bell-shaped roof window. Risalits and corner bays outlined by blocked pilasters. Terrace with baluster railings in front of the central part. Interior with preserved salons with wooden wainscoting in rococo style and panel paintings with harbor views from the 18th century and Chinese landscapes on wooden panels in the dining room. Monumental staircase designed by architect E. Flanneau in the new right wing.
