The statue the 'Zandjan', made by Daniël Schelfhout, stands in the middle of the municipal square. The statue symbolizes the typical Brabants-Kempense profession of yesteryear: the sand digger. The sand was extracted from the heath ponds, washed until it was beautifully white, and then transported in wheelbarrows to Mechelen. The white sand was used to sprinkle the floor of the living room.
