A first piece (1.13 ha) of this special stream valley (in Opwijk the Puttenbeek; in Merchtem and Asse called the Wed- or Wersbeek) was already purchased in 1987 by De IJsvogel vzw. It is the only place in Opwijk where there is a natural reed collar of this surface. Various sources attribute to this area the first settlements (stilt houses) in our regions.
The current stream valley, popularly known as De Putten, was excavated by cutting marl. This marl earth, a kind of limestone humus, was used in the past to make the fields more fertile.
