The Bottom Discharge Pit is a wheel or gully. A wheel or gully is a small lake that remains after there was a dike break. You can easily recognize a wheel because the dike is laid around it afterwards. Because the water flowed quickly through the opening during the dike break, a lot of soil material is removed from that place. The pit is therefore usually much deeper than the adjacent ditches. Hence the name Bottomless pit.
