In the Middle Ages, Overslag was located along a creek that ran from the Honte deep inland and was connected to Ghent by canals. To prevent flooding, the creek was dammed at Overslag. Now the goods had to be transferred from one boat to another at the height of this dam, hence the name. At that time, Overslag belonged to the parish of Zuiddorpe.
