According to Christian Stickx, the Templars played an important role in the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302. The Flemish Templar Knights chose to side with the Flemish municipalities against the French king. However, the French Templars accompanied Philip the Fair, albeit reluctantly. This is not illogical, as a few years later the French king would completely annihilate this order. It was due to the information and influence of the Templars of Ypres that the French Templars ultimately did not advance into the marshes of Groeninghenkouter during the Battle of the Golden Spurs.
