The town hall was built in 1938 according to plans by the Ghent architect Geo Bontinck of 1936 and under the direction of contractor G. De Gezelle, to replace the first town hall in the Franz Wittoucklaan, designed in 1868-70 by architect Edmond de Perre-Montigny. The old town hall was repurposed as a mother house and clinic. The new building, built in a modernist architecture, was a symbol of the modern, dynamic industrial community along the canal. Due to its design, the complex has a strong representative character and is typologically clearly recognizable as an administrative building. The interior of the town hall was restored and renovated in 1974-75 under the direction of interior designers J. Goethals and E. Wittebroodt. In 1999, an outdoor elevator was installed on the south side, to the left of the corner tower, covered with bluestone slabs like the portal. Recently, the information desk and the ticket hall were renovated.
