The brothers Edward and Frans Van Raemdonck, hailing from Temse, have become a Flemish symbol of brotherly love. According to legend, Frans was wounded during a nighttime attack in March 1917. The Walloon soldier Aimé Fieve wants to help his Flemish sergeant, but they both die from an exploding shell. Edward, who has gone in search of his brother, finds them both but is immediately killed by German machine-gun fire. All three are buried on site. In 1932, the three are exhumed and reinterred in a single grave in the crypt of the Yser Tower in Diksmuide. In 1933, the monument to the Van Raemdonck brothers is unveiled at their original burial site.
