I fratelli Edward e Frans Van Raemdonck, originari di Temse, sono diventati un simbolo fiammingo di amore fraterno. Secondo la leggenda, Frans sarebbe rimasto ferito durante un attacco notturno nel marzo del 1917. Il soldato vallone Aimé Fieve vuole aiutare il suo sergente fiammingo, ma entrambi incontrano la morte a causa di un proiettile esplosivo. Edward, che si è messo in cerca del fratello, trova entrambi ma viene immediatamente ucciso dal fuoco di mitragliatrice tedesca. Tutti e tre vengono sepolti sul posto. Nel 1932, i tre vengono riesumati e riposti in una tomba unica nella cripta della Torre d’Acciaio a Diksmuide. Nel 1933, nella loro originale tomba viene svelato il monumento ai fratelli Van Raemdonck.
