On 13 May 1847, city architect François Drossaert drew up a design dossier for the construction of a new prison behind the police station on the Grand Place. On October 1, 1848, the building was inaugurated. Until 1862 they actually served the police sentences here. After the restoration in 1978, it was converted into a museum.
After 20 years, the museum was renovated and significantly expanded. Not only was the exhibition space doubled, but sufficient space was also provided to preserve the museum exhibits in optimal conditions.
