Plantin-Moretus Museum

Antwerp was the center of humanism and science in the Low Countries. This can largely be attributed to the Frenchman Christophe Plantin, who settled here as a bookbinder and leatherworker. Around 1555, he switched to the printing trade, and he did so 'in all the languages used in the Christian realm'. The Plantin-Moretus Museum is the only museum in the world that appears on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The printing presses of the Officina Plantiniana are the oldest preserved in the world. The Print Room contains a unique collection of prints and drawings by Antwerp masters since the sixteenth century, alongside a collection of manuscripts and books. In the patrician house hang numerous family portraits, painted by the family friend Rubens.
