The origins of the Augustinian priory of Groenedaal date back to 1343. From a hermitage, already mentioned in 1304, it grew into a real priory. Jan van Ruusbroec was one of the 14th-century inhabitants. In 1783 the priory was dissolved by Joseph II, under the French occupation it was forfeited. Most of the buildings were demolished in 1825. The priory farm, the substructure of the priory church (now a barn) and the former priors' house (later groenendaal castle) were protected from demolition.
