If you find a completely different type of trees and shrubs here, it is thanks to Leopold II. In addition to the use-thin beech trees, you will find pines and redwoods here. They are even ordered according to a world map.
The Arboretum is an experiment of Leopold II. In 1902, the king had hundreds of tree species from the continents of the northern hemisphere transplanted to Tervuren to see which trees could survive here and which could then be planted in Belgium.
