Appearance

I saw a white angel passing over my head;
His dazzling flight calmed the storm,
And silenced the noisy sea in the distance.
- What are you doing here, angel, on this night?
I said to him. - He replied: - I come to take your soul. -
And I was afraid, for I saw that it was a woman;
And I said to her, trembling and extending my arms:
- What will be left for me? for you will fly away. -
He did not answer; the sky, besieged by shadows,
Was fading... - If you take my soul, I cried,
Where will you carry it? show me to which place.
He remained silent. - O passerby of the blue sky,
Are you death? I said to him, or are you life? -
And the night grew deeper over my enraptured soul,
And the angel became black, and said: - I am love.
But his dark brow was more charming than the day,
And I saw, in the shadow where his eyes shone,
The stars through the feathers of his wings.
