The porphyry is cooled magma that is 435 million years old (Silurian). Due to the harmonious balance between its physical and chemical properties, the porphyry aggregate is suitable for all premium applications in construction: roads, concrete structures, runways, ballast bed for railways, etc. It is the best choice for all applications where the highest quality is necessary. The history of the Quenast quarry dates back to the 16th century. Traces of construction using porphyry rubble from that period have been found. In the 19th century, the production of artisanal porphyry stones was gradually replaced by a more industrial organization. After World War II, the Belgian road network needed to be rebuilt. The operators of the quarry began producing porphyry aggregate on a large scale for foundations and pavements. Today, the Quenast quarry has an elliptical shape measuring 1200 by 800 meters. In terms of area, it is one of the largest quarries in Europe. Sagrex employs more than 60 people there for an annual production of approximately 1,800,000 tons of porphyry.
