Tunnel Spichtenberg

Description

He is the only one in Flanders, built in 1862 - 1863, destroyed in 1918 during the retreat of the Germans and quickly restored to make the busy railway line Oudenaarde-Ronse-Leuze passable again. The railway tunnel served for one night during World War II as a shelter for Hitler's "armored train." On a winter's day in 1966, a piece of the Spichtenberg collapsed down to the railway bed, just before the entrance of the tunnel, causing train traffic on the Oudenaarde-Ronse line to be interrupted for more than a year.
