Adolf Papeleu, after whom this park is named, was born in 1811. Together with Louis Van Houtte, he built a world-famous horticultural company in Gentbrugge. He broke away from Van Houtte a bit later. On the Boskant heath in Wetteren, he started his own tree nursery. The business grew to 65 hectares and immediately became the largest tree cultivation company in Belgium. The ailing Adolf Papeleu passed away in 1859 in Ledeberg.
