Brewery het Anker is renowned worldwide for its prestigious Gouden Carolus beer. It dates back to 1369 and is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium. The three copper kettles in the brewhouse date from just after World War II.
Jan from the Anker started the brewery in 1369. Later, his son Matthijs took over the city brewery and began brewing the 'Mechelschen Bruynen'. This beer is popular among both the bourgeoisie and the nobility. Even Emperor Charles took a liking to the beer, and now, six centuries later, 'den Bruynen' is still being brewed. The beer is now named 'Gouden Carolus Ambrio' and is slightly heavier than its predecessor.
In the 1990s, the building underwent a significant renovation. Charles Leclef, the fifth generation of the family, restored the old buildings and modernized the cooling, fermentation, and aging facilities.
The multiple award-winning specialty beers Gouden Carolus Classic and Gouden Carolus Tripel are still brewed here today in the authentic brewhouse with copper kettles.
