In April 1349, a letter is read here that announces an enormous crisis and epidemic. It is a letter from Louis Heyligen of Beringen, who holds an important position at the court of the Pope of Avignon. The plague is on its way. Louis Heyligen reports that in January 1349, a ship arrived in Marseille. The people on board were horrifically infected. He mentions that half of the people of Avignon are already dead. You would do well to lock yourself in your house until the epidemic is over.
A third of the population would die in Europe.
