Did you know that Charles the Good was murdered in the Saint Donatian Church? It was on March 2 1127. When the count publicly emphasized the unfree status of the Erembalds due to a legal dispute, he became the victim of a conspiracy led by Bertulf, provost of the Bruges chapter of Saint Donatian and a member of the Erembald clan himself. Twenty-eight conspirators were captured and, by order of the French king Louis VI, were thrown down from the highest tower of the castle.
