The old Toll House at Jan van Eyck Square in the Belgian city of Bruges consists of several properties: the corner house "The Holy Grave," the Pijnders cottage, the actual Toll House, and the house "The Weaselkin."
The actual Toll House is located behind the natural stone gable. This property was originally a spacious merchant's house from the early 1200s. The district was fully developing as a trading center around the harbor that was coming into being. Ships entered Bruges via the Langerei and the Spiegelrei. For merchants, this was the ideal place to erect houses with ample storage space. Presumably, in the early fourteenth century, the office of the Great Toll found shelter there.
