In the Court of Watervliet, the famous Thomas More stayed several times. Thomas More was an English Renaissance humanist, lawyer, philosopher, and statesman. He became famous for his book Utopia, which he wrote in 1516, in which he describes the political system of an ideal non-existent island nation. The description of Utopia shows similarities with a socialist paradise. More used this book to oppose the economic and political policies of England. He was canonized in 1935 by Pope Pius XI and is celebrated on June 22. Did you know that he was beheaded at Tower Hill on July 6, 1535? More did not want to cooperate with the new succession laws of Henry VIII. When he refused to acknowledge the Act of Supremacy in 1534, these facts were interpreted as treason.
