This charming little building at the Denderleeuw station is one of the rare remaining examples of the neo-classical architectural style from the late 19th century. The Castle was privately owned for nearly a century until the Van Roy family put it up for sale to the municipal authorities in 1995. To prevent the building from being sacrificed for new construction and subdivision, or completely falling into decay, the administration decided to purchase the property along with the adjacent coach house and the surrounding garden. In addition to the redevelopment of the station square, the purchase and renovation of the Castle were an important boost for the re-evaluation of the neglected station area. The building was completely renovated and has since provided accommodation for various municipal services such as the youth service, cultural service, sports service, and social service. Many associations also gratefully utilize the internal infrastructure for organizing cultural and other events. The renovated castle garden is also excellent for organizing outdoor events. It can therefore be rightly stated that the Castle, along with the coach house, currently forms the beating heart of cultural and community life in Denderleeuw. The castle garden from 1906 was primarily conceived as an ornamental and pleasure garden at the time. In the planting, particular emphasis was placed on the tree and plant species that are characteristic of parks and castle gardens from the early 20th century. Here, you can see, among other things, a giant sequoia, a Chinese tulip tree, a beech, and a horse chestnut, as well as holly, rhododendron, and hydrangea. In its redevelopment, efforts were made to preserve this green setting as much as possible in its original state. Nevertheless, the incorporation of contemporary accents was not shunned. Where necessary, damaged or diseased trees were replaced with carefully considered new plantings. A discreetly laid walking path and numerous seating areas allow the visitor to experience this green oasis in the heart of the city.
