The castle was built between 1662 and 1664 on the orders of Baron Jacob Ferdinand de la Pierre, lord of Fay, as an expansion of the then "Hof Ten Damme".
The Gravenkasteel owes its name to the noble family of the counts of Salm, who inhabited the castle for about 80 years during the 18th century. Over the years, the castle changed owners several times. In 1895, the castle was sold to Mrs. Mathilde Maria Moretus De Bouchout - Geelhand.
