While the rest of Lillo had to make way for the expansion of the port in the 1960s, the fort was preserved. Today, there is a tiny village on the fort grounds named Lillo-Fort. Only about 30 people live there, who receive a lot of visitors from day tourists.
The fort itself dates back to 1580, just like Fort Liefkenshoek across the Scheldt. Both are among the oldest forts around Antwerp. They were of great importance for military control over maritime traffic at the time, as they could jointly close off the Scheldt.
Fun facts: large parts of the Studio 100 series Mega Mindy were filmed in Lillo-Fort. And although it is a very small village, there is indeed a museum. In the Poldermuseum, you can learn all about the history of the polder villages during World War II.
