The present church was built during the 14th century and was completed around 1440. It is located on the banks of the Lys, just on the French-Belgian border. The Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella wrote in 1608 that there was no more beautiful place of worship in the County of Flanders. This monumental, Gothic church has remained the silent witness of the flourishing period under the Burgundian dukes. Architect Huib Hoste wrote in 1953 that "the Sint-Medardus church can be mentioned as a lesser-known, even almost unknown pearl of the many that decorate the architectural crown of West Flanders". The building has been a protected monument since 1964. The interior of the church is also worth a visit. Numerous Wervik history scenes and symbols are discussed: the religious wars in the 16th century, old 17th-century guild cabinets, a mysterious crypt peppered with legends and folk tales. The high altar and the beautiful pulpit from 1693 are also displayed in the church.
