The current church was built during the 14th century and was completed around 1440. It is located on the banks of the Leie, right at the French-Belgian border. The Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella wrote in 1608 that there was no finer place of worship to be found in the County of Flanders. This monumental Gothic church has remained a silent witness to the flourishing period under the Burgundian Dukes. Architect Huib Hoste wrote in 1953 that “the Saint Medardus Church deserves to be mentioned as a lesser-known, almost unknown gem among the many that adorn the architectural crown of West Flanders.” Since 1964, the building has been a protected monument. The interior of the church is also worth a visit. Numerous historical scenes and symbols from Wervik are highlighted: the religious wars of the 16th century, old 17th-century guild cabinets, a mysterious crypt interwoven with legends and folk tales. The high altar and the beautiful pulpit from 1693 also stand out in the church.
