The impressive French monument is the memorial for the French fighter pilot Georges Guynemer in Poelkapelle. Guynemer is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of military aviation. In 1916 and 1917, the airspace above Poelkapelle was also the theater of air battles. Guynemer took off on September 11, 1917, near Dunkirk but disappeared without a trace after a flight over Poelkapelle; his body was never recovered. The monument is crowned by an elegant stork, which refers to his 'Escadrille des Cigognes,' a combat squadron of the French Air Force.
