Here used to be the fortress "De Knocke" which gained fame during the Franco-Spanish-Austrian wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. The peculiar cadastre layout and the rare, light terrain undulations in the polder landscape immediately betray the presence of a defensive system. Most of the place is located on the territory of the municipality of Reninge, only the eastern corner is on the territory of Merkem.
