Permeke museum

The Permeke museum is situated in the house "de vier winden"; the artist Constant Permeke commissioned his friend-architect Pierre Vandervoort to build this modernistic house and lived there until his death in 1952. Vandervoort based his design on a rough sketch made by Permeke himself. It was the wish of Constant Permeke that the house be made open for the public after his death.
Constant Permeke (1886-1952) can rightly be regarded as one of the most important artists of Flemish expressionism. The Permeke museum presents about 80 paintings, almost all sculptures of his oeuvre and a number of drawings.
The museum has now become one of the most important cultural attractions in West Flanders, thanks to the entrance hall furnished by Emiel Veranneman, a nephew of Permeke, the reorganized studio and the newly laid gardens. In addition of Permeke's work, visitors are also able to see work of his father Henri-Louis Permeke, his son-in-law Pierre Devos and his friends Frits Van den Berghe, Oscar Jespers, Henri Puvrez and Luc Peire. The Permeke museum and the Ensor house in Ostend are placed under the museum management of Mu.ZEE in Ostend
