Von 1932 bis 1960 fungierte die Mercator als Schulschiff für die Offiziere der belgischen Handelsschifffahrt. Jetzt liegt es vor Anker in Oostende, wo es mit seiner authentischen Innenausstattung den perfekten Ort für ein nautisches Museum bildet, eine treibende Schatzkammer voller Gegenständen, die auf den vielen Weltreisen des Schiffes gesammelt wurden. Regelmäßig fährt das Schiff aus dem Hafen aus, um an großen Segelveranstaltungen teilzunehmen. 2012 feiert die Mercator seinen 80. Jahrestag.
