At the corner of Kapelstraat and Klemskerkestraat lies a picturesque chapel hidden in the greenery: Our Lady of the Dunes. The current stone chapel dates from 1736, but a chapel on a pole was erected between 1710 and 1715. This was often done in unsafe and deserted places back then. Kapelstraat was 250 years ago nothing more than a lonely sandy road behind the unsafe and inaccessible dunes. From the very beginning, the chapel has been a beloved pilgrimage site for Flemish fishermen.
It is filled to the brim with photographs of missing and deceased fishermen, holy cards, and flowers. This colorful collection offers a glimpse into the soul of our sailors.
Next to the chapel stands a Marian grotto, where candles burn throughout the year. The altar beside it serves as the backdrop for open-air Masses. Every Saturday in July and August, you can attend one. And every third Sunday in May, a pilgrimage stop takes place here. Traditionally, a Eucharistic celebration follows at 4 PM.
