The 'Canadian Forces Memorial' near Saint-Julien was established in memory of the 2,000 dead of the 1st Canadian Division who fell during the counterattacks following the German gas attacks in April and May 1915. It is a monument and not a cemetery. The image of a mourning or pensive soldier is popularly referred to as the 'Canadien'. The monument by F.C. Clemenshaw dates from 1921 and is considered one of the most successful in the Salient. It depicts a mourning soldier, his hands resting on the stock of his rifle.
